If you thought that there was no badminton in college, you heard wrong! The UCSD Badminton Team is one of the most popular sports on campus, with a record membership of 100+ students. In fact, we have our own league, sponsored team uniforms, social events such as a ski trip, a Seattle trip, tournaments, and more! We play in the Southern California Collegiate Badminton League, which includes UCLA, UCI, UCR, USC, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, and others. We are very excited for the new year and welcome all of you to be a part of it. We practice twice a week on Wednesdays from 8-11pm in Main Gym and 7-11pm in Rec Gym and Sundays from 7-11pm in both Main Gym and Rec Gym. In addition, we have open gyms throughout the week with times posted on the UCSD Rec website. Come check out this friendly environment if you've had previous experience or have none at all. Come to play competitively or recreationally! If you have any questions, feel free to contact our UCSD Badminton team captains. 2025-2026 | Game Recaps

5/23-24/26 - Annual Sungod Tournament

This year’s Sun God Tournament was an incredible success, with over 280 players traveling from both in-state and out of state to compete in UCSD’s biggest hosted tournament! The exciting two-day event showcased outstanding badminton talent, intense matches, and an amazing atmosphere fueled by the support of friends, family, and teammates. More than just a competition, the tournament brought the badminton community together and created unforgettable memories, making it the perfect and exciting way to wrap up the season!

4/10-13/26 - Division 1 National Championships

The 2026 Division 1A Nationals was one to remember and mark in the history of UCSD Badminton at US Nationals. Battling it out in the group stage, UCSD clinched their win against Purdue with a score of 6-3, along with a comfortable win against Virginia Tech of 8-1. The quarterfinal matches against UC Davis were some of the most intense and thrilling matches that took place throughout the whole tournament, and UCSD just missed 3rd by 2 points! However, we finished off strong clenching 5th in the Nation by defeating UW with a score of 5-4 and a score of 5-3 against the University of Maryland. It was truly a great achievement marked by our athletes and a strong finish to the competitive season! We are very proud of every athlete who gave their all on and off the court.

3/7/26 - League Match 4 Results

The Tritons have made their mark in the Southern Collegiate Badminton League, remaining undefeated against every college they have faced. Ella Mak, Natalie Yang, and Sanika Gurav dominated their opponents in women’s singles, while Victoria Zheng and Deepal Deleena secured a decisive victory in women’s doubles with a score of 21–7, 21–13. Three exceptional mixed doubles pairs—Wyatt Fong with Annabelle Zhou, Nolan Chin with Jamie Yang, and Chloe Liu with Auston Yang—all won their respective matches, making major contributions to the team’s overall success.

The men’s singles players, Jason Yang, Jaden Seangmany, and Matthew Yu, also delivered strong performances, defeating their opponents in several competitive matches. Caleb Lapp and Eric Mei showcased impressive skill and teamwork, closing out their match with a score of 21–18, 21–18.

The Tritons have officially qualified for Nationals. This is an incredible achievement for the team, and there is great anticipation to see the talent, determination, and team spirit they will bring to the national stage.

The UW Husky Open was a very successful trip, with many of the club members travelling to Seattle to compete in the tournament. Women's singles A was between UCSD’s club members Ella and Sanika lasting another impeccable hour-long match. Esien and Salina also advanced deep into their respective Women’s Doubles brackets, showing strong teamwork and determination throughout the tournament.

Beyond the results, the trip was a great opportunity for the players to gain competitive experience, bond as a team, and represent the club with pride. The team is incredibly proud of everyone who competed and supported one another, and they’re excited to build on this momentum for their upcoming tournaments!

It was another great day for UCSD Badminton, competing at their third league match held at UCLA. The team brought out their A-game to avoid defeat against UCLA, ending with a 5-5 draw on their home court. The WD pair, Ana and Sanika, had an hour-long match, bringing the win home with a score of 19-21, 21-14, 26-28 while Ella secured her women's singles victory with a score of 10-21,19-21.

The men's doubles players, Wyatt and Adwin, also claimed victory over USC’s men's doubles pair with a score of 21-15, 21-19. In mixed doubles, Esien and Matthew C. won the third set against USC with a satisfying score of 21-18, 21-23, 21-4 whilst Jason and Ana obtained the win in their mixed doubles match with a pleasing score of 21-18, 21-5. Matthew Y and Nolan played great men’s doubles, sealing their win with 21-14, 21-14 while Khloe fought hard during her WS game. Mitch sealed his men’s singles game with a 21-15, 21-19 score, displaying excellent badminton skills.

1/14/26 - UC Berkeley Scrimmage

UCSD Badminton had an eventful and exciting night of scrimmages against UC Berkeley, featuring a series of great matches across multiple courts. Both teams displayed strong performances, technical skill, and competitive spirit throughout the evening. The atmosphere remained highly competitive yet respectful, with sportsmanship shown by players on and off the court.

Long rallies, strategic shot placement, and consistent teamwork highlighted the level of play from both sides, keeping matches engaging for spectators and participants alike. The positive energy and mutual respect between UCSD and UC Berkeley made the scrimmages enjoyable and rewarding for everyone in attendance. Overall, the event served as a valuable opportunity for players to gain experience, test their skills, and continue building team chemistry moving forward.

11/22/25 - Badminton League Match 2

UCSD absolutely dominated the competition this weekend, powering through the day undefeated without dropping a single match! The Tritons tore through PCC, CPP, and CSUF, securing a clean 3–0 sweep and showcasing top-tier grit, skill, and teamwork.

Jason Yang and Matthew Yu kicked things off with a high-momentum win over CSUF, closing out their match 21–13, 21–19. Newly formed duo Shreyas Kotian and Thompson Wong came out swinging as well, surging to a 30–23 victory against CPP. Not to be outdone, Angela Xu and Sanika Gurav crushed their CPP opponents with a commanding 30–15 win.

In women’s singles, Ella Mak delivered one of the most decisive wins of the day, dismantling CSUF with an incredible 30–4 performance. Over in mixed doubles, Jaden Seangmany and Annabelle Zhou toppled PCC with a strong 30–15 finish, while Joseph Bee and Nolan Chin battled through a nail-biter to secure a clutch 30–28 men’s doubles victory.

Men’s singles standout Wyatt Fong continued his streak of excellence, sweeping through his matches with confidence and control. Meanwhile, Esien Ng and Ardra Mohan played with grace and fire, earning a dominant 30–10 win in women’s doubles against CPP. To top it off, Matthew Chan and Esien Ng displayed seamless teamwork in mixed doubles, closing out their match against CPP 30–26.

Overall, the Tritons had an unforgettable day, proving their determination and domination on every court. UCSD walked away not just undefeated, but showing steady consistency.

10/25-26/25 - Badminton League Match 1

UCSD hosted their first Southern California College Badminton League (SCCBL) match along with 11 other competitive SCCBL schools that included: Cal Poly Pomona (CPP), UCSB, CSU Long Beach, UCR, Pasadena City College (PCC), SDSU, CSU Northridge (CSUN), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (CPSLO), UCLA, UCI, and USC.

League Match 1 was a highly successful event for UCSD, as we won both our matches against SDSU and SLO overall. Our players gave it their all, displaying excellent skill and talent with some truly nail-biting matches. The Tritons dominated all their events, with Wyatt Fong winning his hour-long 3-setter in Men's Singles with a score of 18-21,21-18, 21-19 and Ella Mak dominating the Women's Singles. Our Men's Doubles played by Jason Yang and Nolan Chin as well as Wyatt Fong and Shreyas Kotian, greatly aided in achieving this remarkable achievement. As for our two women's doubles pairs, Salina Tang and Angela Xu, and Annabelle Zhou and Ella Mak, both sailed smoothly against their opponents, helping us reach the finish line. Edwards Tong and Angela Xu also expressed excellent performance in their mixed doubles match, winning 21-12,21-17 against UCR.

Overall, UCSD had a great performance throughout the day, demonstrating not only the team’s strong technical ability but also their sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination. The event showcased the Tritons’ growing presence in the Southern California badminton league, setting a promising tone for the rest of the SCCBL season.

10/19/25 - UCLA Pre-Season Results

UCLA Pre-Season was a successful event, allowing our new club members to experience the competitive side of badminton while maintaining great sportsmanship throughout all their matches. While everyone gave their absolute best and played well, a few of the highlights that stood out were Sahil Gurbuxani's and Tsuyoshi Ishikawa's entry into the semi-finals main draw for the Men's Doubles event, as well as Natalie Yang and Amrutasai Pusapati's semi-final main draw Women's Doubles match. With such a strong start to the season, we can't wait to see what our club members will achieve next!

2024-2025 | Game Recaps

2/23/25 - SCCBL Match 4

The Tritons had a strong showing in their final match against the SCCBL schools. Though UCSD had already qualified for nationals, there was some excellent games that were played. Junior Nicole Li won a decisive women's singles match against CSU Long Beach's Yuna Yang, with a final score of 21-10, 21-13. Mixed doubles pair Jason Yang and Ana Zhou won 21-16 and 21-18 against a pair from UCI. In another excellent match, Shuto Nishida won a tough singles game against Kenny Luu from UCI, with final score 17-21, 21-12, and 21-15. We look forward to providing an excellent showing at the upcoming Sun God Tournament too!

2/15-16/25 - Husky Badminton Tournament

The Tritons traveled to Seattle to play in the 2025 Husky Open. Members competed in events such as Men's doubles, Women's doubles, and corresponding singles events. Freshman Matthew Yu won the Men's singles BCD bracket from a group of 128 players. The score of his finals was 21-15, 16-21, and 21-18. Freshman Sanika Gurav did well in the Women's singles open bracket, ultimately placing fourth. Overall, the Tritons had a strong showing in Seattle, and we hope to bring on the challenge at our own Sun God tournament in the Spring!

1/25/25 - Tritons Win 9 of 11 Games and Qualify for Nationals!

The Tritons put up a fantastic showing at their away game at UCLA for SCCBL. In men's doubles, pairs Matthew Chan/Shreyas Kotian and Shumi Wu/Jason Yang put up decisive victories against pairs from CSUF. UCSD put up an impressive 9 victories out of 11 matches played against Pasadena Community College. With one more SCCBL match remaining, UCSD has qualified to go to nationals, which will be held in Boston April 5-6. So far, UCSD has dominated the competition. Keep up the hard work Tritons!

11/23/24 - SCCBL Match #2

Tritons faced off against schools in the Southern California College Badminton League (SCCBL) for the second time this year on Saturday, November 23rd in UCSD's Main and Rec gyms. Prior to the event, club members participated in a fierce rankings tournament which promoted our best players into the positions of facing off against SCCBL schools. In men's singles, juniors Wyatt Fong and Shuto Nishida both won their matches against Ethan Ma and Jackson Hu of UCR, respectively. Fong's match ended in an intense score of 19-21, 21-12, 21-19, bringing it back in the third set to give UCSD the victory. UCSD's Angela Xu beat UCR's Ashlee Thai in women's singles with a dominant score of 21-2, 21-5. An event of highlight was mixed doubles where both pairs of Joseph Bee/Salina Tang and Matthew Chan/Esien Ng comfortably won against UCR. Overall, UCSD had an outstanding showing. Out of 30 events played, UCSD won 25 of them. The next SCCBL event will be hosted at UCLA on January 25, 2025. Ending 2024 on a high note, the Tritons are sure to provide a show in all badminton events while visiting as well!

UCSD hosted a friendly match for the Southern California College Badminton League, attended by UCSD, Cal Poly Pomona (CPP), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (CPSLO), UCSB, CSU Long Beach, UCR, CSU Northridge (CSUN), Pasadena City College (PCC), SDSU, CSU Fullerton (CSUF), UCLA, UCI, and USC. The event brought together some of the region’s top collegiate badminton talent, and UCSD made a strong showing. UCSD's mixed doubles pair Matthew Chan and Ana Zhou delivered an impressive performance, defeating USC's Yifei Zhang and Reyna Wan in two dominant sets, 21-15 and 21-16. Additionally, senior Reno Guo showed his skill and experience in the men's singles category, securing a victory over CPSLO's Brandon with a well-executed and clinical performance.

The Tritons’ dominance extended across all categories. In the men’s doubles, the pair of Kevin Wu and Nathaniel Lee powered through their matches, while the women’s doubles team of Lily Zhang and Sarah Lee earned a hard-fought win against UCLA's top duo. UCSD’s strong team efforts also included key victories in the men’s and women’s singles events, with each player contributing to the Tritons’ overall success.

All in all, UCSD triumphed with an 8-2 victory over USC, a commanding 7-0 win against CPSLO, and a 9-1 domination of CPP, securing a dominant result in their first SCCBL League match. With their solid team chemistry and impressive individual performances, UCSD sent a clear message to the rest of the league. The next SCCBL match will be hosted on November 23, 2024, where UCSD hopes to continue their streak of dominance and cement their status as a top contender in the league.
