UCSD Goes to University of Washington
Over the three day President’s day weekend, members of UCSD badminton traveled over 1000 miles to
participate in the Husky Open hosted by University of Washington’s badminton team. Unlike most
tournaments that our members were accustomed to, this tournament was based on the drop flight
format. This meant that everyone starts out in the same bracket and based on your win loss ratio of
your first two games, will determine the flight that you will eventually compete in. The tournament
began on Saturday, players woke up bright and early to get ready for their singles and mixed matches
for the day. Junior Leilani Lu lost her first game but won her second, placing her in the D bracket. She
won the rest of her games to reach the final where she played a close game and eventually winning D
women’s singles 1st. Junior Eu Junn Tang and freshman Mitsuyo Machida won their first mixed doubles
game but lost their second placing them in the C bracket. They played two more games making it to the
quarter finals where they played an intense three set match but unfortunately succumbed to their
opponents. Leilani Lu and freshman Andrew Li also played in the D bracket of mixed doubles. They
played extremely well in their semi-final game to make it to the final. Due to scheduling conflicts, they
were required to return the next day to play their final game, where they won in two straight games to
claim the D mixed doubles 1st place trophy. UCSD did not play any women’s doubles but did have a few
pairs that played men’s doubles. Unfortunately the furthest any pair got was into the quarterfinals of
the D men’s doubles bracket by Senior Derrick Cheung and Andrew Li. The team all enjoyed this
experience of traveling to play a tournament and we hope to be able to do so again in the future.
