On Friday, February 3rd, the UC San Diego Tritons faced off against Chapman for their last home game of the season. On a night of spirit across the UC San Diego campus, the Tritons’ ice hockey team hosted their senior night to say goodbye to their seniors, Dylan Shives and Ryan Jensen. Honoring their past 4 seasons on the team, the Tritons sought to end their last home game on a winning note. However, fate is a cruel mistress and once again the Tritons had a poor start, falling quickly behind in the opening seconds as Chapman scored a controversial goal by hitting Jensen’s hand as he went to catch the puck off a rebound attempt, making the game 1-0 early on. The rest of the period went about the same, with poor bounces, intercepted passes, and whiffed opportunities all leading to the Tritons falling behind 5-1 going into the first period break. In the locker room, however, the Tritons rallied hard and were determined to play a better second period. They succeeded in their goal, scoring 3 goals in the second to make the game 5-4. However, after a soft too many men penalty went against the Tritons, Chapman scored on the subsequent power play to make the game 6-4 going into the second intermission. The 8-man squad became exhausted in the third period, however, and it showed on the ice. The Tritons began to fall behind the better rested Chapman skaters, who managed to pull ahead once more, eventually leading to a match finally of 9-5. Though by the end of the game the tally doesn’t seem close, it was a well fought game to the end. Sadly the Tritons fell short on senior night/spirit night, but captain Dylan Shives did manage to score 2 goals in his last home game with UC San Diego, while newcomer Stefan Jovanovic scored a hat-trick for the Tritons. UC San Diego looks to rebound next weekend in Anaheim as they play a rematch for their last game of the regular season.
