This past weekend, UC San Diego Club Baseball hosted University of Arizona Club Baseball in a conference series. The Triton’s started the weekend by sending senior Yousef Koutnik to the mound. Yousef was on his game against the Wildcats, allowing 0 earned runs on only 3 hits and 1 walk in a complete game performance. Arizona’s starting pitcher was also sharp in the game, but UC San Diego was able to break through in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the game 2-1 on a walk-off single by Alec Lopez.
In game 2, Yuki Komine pitched for the Tritons but was roughed up a bit by Arizona, allowing 6 runs in 4 innings. Andrew Campos came in relief and pitched 3 scoreless innings but the 6 runs would prove to be too much for the Tritons to overcome as they wound up being shut out in the game despite a 3 hit performance by freshman Hunter Woodruff. UC San Diego dropped the second game 6-0.
In the final game of the series, Ray Young and Richie Mendoza pitched for UC San Diego. The two looked sharp throughout most of the game, but two big 5-run innings from Arizona keyed by some lucky hits and a few errors spelled the end for the Tritons. UC San Diego did their best to battle back, putting baserunners on in every inning but they couldn’t muster enough on offense and lost the final game of the series 14-7.
UC San Diego now takes a few weeks off to prepare for finals and will pick back up again with a 3 game conference series vs Northern Arizona University on the weekend of April 1st.
