The NSSA college surf season officially began this past weekend with the first contest of the year, which took place at Blacks Beach. Roughly 20 college surf teams, which equates to about 400 surfers, came down from all over the coast to compete Saturday and Sunday in an effort to take an early season lead.

The conditions were all anyone could hope for and more. Saturday consisted of 2-4 ft. surf and light wind all day, which provided ample opportunity for the first 2 rounds of men’s competition to be held. Sunday had fun, rippable surf in the 3-5 ft. range, which provided an exciting final day of competition for both the men and women.

Point Loma Nazarene University, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Mira Costa, finished first, second, and third while UCSD A and B teams finished 7th and 24th with a total of 58 and 22 points respectively. UCSD standouts include Logan Labaugh and Michael Cassen for each making it to the quarterfinals of the men’s competition, Skyla Bertsch for making it to the semifinals, and Frankie Seely for making the finals and placing 4th in the women’s competition!
