Another Year, Another Win at Developmental Regionals
The weekend of April 29th and 30th, UCSD Dragon Coalition's B Team (B-Co) attended B-Team Regionals at SLO. This tournament would have been the last of the season if B-Co did not earn a bid to A-Team Regionals. So they had to play well if they wished to extend their season. During their first game against Arizona B, it was foggy and cold, but B-Co brought the heat. They played aggressively with bold, sharp cuts from the cutters and clean, stable throws from the handlers. They scored point after point, never losing the energy they started the game with. They emerged victorious against Arizona B with a score of 11-0. Next, B-Co challenged UC Davis B. This game was closer with many points lasting over ten minutes. Each point was a battle in which it appeared that it could go either way. However, B-Co was able to clutch a majority of the long points to win with a final score of 8-3. Highlights of the day go to Emma “Scobi” Rourke, for scoring most of B-Co’s points and being vital to their victory, and Olivia “T-Bolt” Dance, for making some amazing cuts and bids and scoring some very important points for B-Co as well. Other highlights go to rookie handlers Yasmin “Osprey” Jaber and Marisa “Cascade” Viola for being dependable handlers with great throws and patience even under pressure. The day went very well for B-Co!
The next morning, B-Co was lucky enough to have a first game bye before semifinals against Stanford B. Due to the results of the previous day, B-Co had already secured one of the 3 developmental bids to Southwest Regionals, but they were still looking to prove themselves in the remaining games of the tournament. Sure enough, the game against Stanford saw every B-Co determined to leave everything they had on the field. All this effort paid off with a 10-5 win and an opportunity to take the whole tournament. This final game was against UCLA B, the most likely contender for B-Co’s rival in the developmental bracket. Once again, B-Co showed that they had what it takes to win, fighting through zone defense and tight matchups to defeat UCLA 9-3 and win 1st place. The entire weekend was filled with so much spirit and highlighted how much B-Co had grown as a team throughout the season. Rookies such as Emma “Matcha” Chen played their hearts out, making great cuts and catches. Many of them also carried the sideline, like Heidi “Ajax” Galan with her incredible cheers and team spirit. B-Co overall had much to be proud of as they headed home, ready to take on Southwest Regionals the following weekend.
