The Tritons had their first tournament of the 2016-2017 season at San Diego State on November 19th-November 20th. With over 12 new players to the team, the Tritons pulled through with an overall record of 3-1 to start the season.
On Saturday, the Tritons started off slow against the USC Trojans losing 5-8. Notable highlights came from Katie “Brad” Archer, who had the most assists of the game. Going into the next game the Tritons faced the 2016 CWPA National Champs UC Santa Barbara and ended up defeating the Gauchos 16-11. One fellow Triton, Mckenzie “McRib” Nelson had several assists and put up numbers on the score board helping lead the Tritons to victory along with offensive threat Hannah “Shrek” Caskey.
After a good night’s rest the Tritons came back on Sunday ready for action. The first game of the day started off with some drizzle and after leaping into the cold water the Tritons defeated Cal Poly in a close game 11-9 with goals across the roster from Caskey, Natalie “Liele” Le, Cathleen “Pup” Nguyen, Kinsey “Kids Meal” Van Deynze, and Allison “Kreamer” Kramer. At sunset, the Tritons came back with high energy defeating Arizona State 15-9 with leading scorers Caskey and Macey “Mom” Rafter. Spotlight shifted to Cami “Grami” Cunningham who scored her first goal ever in her career, a beautiful shot underneath the goalie’s arm.
The UC San Diego Women’s Water Polo team is excited for their upcoming season with new faces and talent added to the team’s roster. After a wonderful performance of some new players, as well as some fantastic returners, the Tritons are ready for their next tournament in their home pool in February.
