11/8/25 - An excellent showing for UCSD at this year's West Coast Champs
The Tritons’ commodore described this event as "the best he has seen UCSD perform in [his] years here." UCSD’s top sailors got to show off their skills on their home stage in this championship event.
This is not an easy event; teams send out their best pairs to compete at the Tritons’ home Mission Bay Yacht Club. Day one started off with a chilly and shifty southwest breeze. Light breeze and strong current made for a tactical day on the water, rewarding teams who stayed patient and connected the dots. PRO Doug Hart and his team of Aztec volunteers were able to get four races off in each division before daylight (and breeze) faded. After a mentally exhausting day of racing, the fleet was welcomed by a BBQ by the beach. No protests were filed.
But Sunday had the conditions everyone had come for. Consistent, strong wind, with blue skies and a day of excellent racing.
Summing up the scores from both days, UCSD placed 6th out of the 17 teams that came to compete. This is a great showing of growth, especially since their top sailors have been a bit disappointed in their performance in the last couple events. The Tritons are hoping to continue this trend in future competitions!
