3/1/25 - Cactus Cup
This is a very unique event for us San Diego sailors, since it's not often we get to sail under the desert sun, with hills of chaparral all around us. But that isn't all that makes this event unique! This is the only regatta we have attended this year where sailors rotated off of pontoon boats! Typically, boats will pull up to either a dock or a beach for sailors to swap in and out of boats, so rotating off of a pontoon boat was a novel and fun experience.
Winds the first day were fairly heavy, at about 18 knots, so our sailors got to spend some time in windier conditions than normal. Unfortunately this meant the marks (used to outline the course) were drifting, so the race committee had to frequently adjust them, so there were only 4 races that day (2 per rotation), and one of them was dropped from the scores.
Sunday was lighter wind, but much more shifty. Still, this allowed for 6 total races for the day.
Overall, our sailors sailed great, especially considering all the novelties involved. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to attending this regatta next year!
