Tritons Improve to 2-0 with Win over Claremont Cougars
Last Wednesday the UCSD Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Claremont to face a tough team, the Claremont Cougars. The Cougars were coming in hot with an overtime win over UCI, and in the process of bouncing back from a 1 point loss to LMU. LMU was last seen by UCSD in last year's playoffs, where the Tritons won in overtime by one point.
The Tritons dominated the first quarter, starting 3-0, and continued their streak to end the half 7-2. Although Claremont and UCSD split face-offs and ground balls, UCSD won the turnover battle and time of possession battle through excellent defensive takeaways by SLC’s 2019 First Team All-League defender Matteo Liebmen. Second-Year Kenny “Ktrain” Venier continued his superb rookie season with a handful of takeaways, clears and hits. According to one Claremont player “he hits like an old lady falls” which is to say, in a devastating fashion.
The second half was even more of a battle as Claremont succeeded in finding several flaws in UCSD’s defense, but it was not enough and Claremont fell to the Tritons 10-7. Junior, Grant “Average White Guy” Barclay, amassed an amazing 5 goals, and received the game ball. According to the Tritons Coaching staff, however, this was more because he actually hustled.
Overall, UCSD will seek to continue their winning streak against Biola on the 22 of February and against league rival UCI after that.
