UCSD would take the week to recover from Aztec Cup, preparing for their must-win game against UCSB. Both teams obtained similar results in Aztec Cup and judging by previous matchups, it was looking like another great battle was going to take place.
The first half showed the complete opposite of what was expected, the Tritons came out blazing hot creating chances left and right. Dominating possession from the first minute and it seemed like UCSB was struggling to even get a touch on the ball. The Tritons were failing to capitalize on their chances even with their dominating performance. UCSD knew that this game had to end in a victory. The half would end 0-0, with a lot to talk over for the Tritons.
The second half would be underway with the Tritons building on their dominant first half performance. It didn’t take the Tritons much time until they found the net, a great buildup play that saw Joey Asfari dribble past two players in the box and an excellent lay off to Nikita who would demonstrate his class by simply placing the ball in the bottom left corner. The game was in their hands and the Tritons could taste qualification for the upcoming regional tournament. With a 1-0 lead, the Tritons continued to possess and defend like never before. However, it was not enough as an unlucky corner kick that led to an unintentional handball in the box, would bring the equalizer from the penalty spot. With ten minutes on the clock, the Tritons didn’t have enough legs to push for the win, so the game would end in a draw. The Tritons season hopes may have come to an end, but nothing has been decided as UCSD will wait for news regarding their qualification for the regional tournament.
