RECognition: Nazia Quadir, REC Experience
Recreation's monthly series to highlight and celebrate our staff

Nazia Quadir is fascinated by languages and bilingualism. You see, she currently speaks English and Spanish and is learning Mandarin Chinese en route to her double major in linguistics in cognitive science.
“Eventually,” she says, “I want to work in learning science to study how people acquire languages and how to teach them best.”
But her true language — it could be argued — is dance. Nazia has been creating poetry and prose through dance since elementary school. Contemporary, hip hop, jazz — you name it. “I’ve always loved ballet,” she says. Now, she teaches and takes technique classes for Aequora Ballet Company, a student-run ballet organization. She’s also been a member of the UCSD Dance Department since she was a freshman, performing in shows such as WinterWorks and New Directions.
“I mostly dance contemporary now, and I look forward to working on these department shows every quarter,” she says. “We perform on stages like the Epstein Amphitheater or the Forum at La Jolla Playhouse. Through my UCSD dance community, I've landed roles in various short films and music video demos, and I hope to continue dancing commercially when I have the opportunity.”
Truthfully, Nazia credits the hundreds and thousands of hours on the dance floor for making her the person she is today.
“I love dance for the discipline it teaches, both mentally and physically,” says Nazia, a third-year in Seventh College. “It encourages you to take risks and build confidence, which has benefited me outside the studio, too.”
Nazia joined Recreation in November of 2023 and is now a Facility Supervisor in REC Experience, a role that sees her overseeing daily operations of our fitness facilities as well as teams of student-staff employees.
“I started lifting at RIMAC when I started college, and really enjoyed taking REC classes like Pilates and Cycle, which inspired me to help get others involved with REC and stay active on campus,” she says.
Recreation Experience Supervisor Erica Moe says Nazia has brought “a great deal of energy to our team.”
“She has a passion for fitness and leads by example,” Moe says.
Outside of her REC classes, Nazia says her most memorable REC experiences have been taking Outback Adventures trips with her co-workers. “I love anything outdoors and think it's the best way to make memories and get to know someone,” she says.
So let's recap. English: check. Spanish: check. Mandarin Chinese: in progress. Now, having experienced Instructional Classes, cycling and Pilates group fitness sessions, and even Outback Adventures trips, it seems Nazia has become fluent in all things Recreation, as well.
“Since working here, I’ve noticed the strong sense of community at REC,” she says. “I think the gym is an amazing place to meet friends and try new things. I want everyone to know about all the experiences we offer and feel inspired to stay active!”
