Don’t worry, you won’t be swimming in open waters! You can swim to Santa Barbara with the Swim for Fitness Incentive program simply by swimming laps at Canyonview Pool.

Participants in the program can come to Canyonview Pool anytime during lap swim hours and record the yards they swam each session in the swim log binder located on the Canyonview front desk. The goal is to swim 340,000 yards (approximately 200 miles), which is equal to the distance from San Diego to Santa Barbara.

Time Estimates:

  • A participant swimming 5,000 yards/day 5x a week will take ~ 3-4 months to complete the swim
  • A participant swimming 3,000 yards/day 5x a week will take ~ 5-6 months to complete the swim
  • A participant swimming 2,000 yards/day 5x a week will take ~ 8.5 months to complete the swim
  • A participant swimming 1,000 yards/day 5x a week will take ~ 1 year and 4 months to complete the swim

The swim log binder has 113 boxes that each represent 3,000 yards, and participants shade in one when a set of 3,000 yards is completed. Once every box is shaded in, you’ve swam to Santa Barbara!

Everyone who swims the entire 340,000 yards will receive a UCSD Recreation Swim Incentive T-shirt and a spot on Canyonview’s Wall of Fame to recognize their grand accomplishment.

This is a great program for recreational swimmers who want to challenge themselves to swim greater distances on a regular basis. Since the program has no specific start and end date, it is a good, healthy way to take a break from studying and get active anytime throughout the year.
