This weekend the UC San Diego Women’s Rugby team took on CSU Northridge, a newcomer to the Division 1 bracket. The Tritons fielded many new players who played new positions—numerous starters could not play. These young players that were competing in new positions really ¬stepped up and carried a heavier load. The game was different and the lady Tritons had their first close win with a score of 26-15, after beginning the season with two blow out wins.
CSUN came out aggressive but the Tritons fought back and made a try by Di-an Duong with Jaylin Stevenson making the conversion. Sylvia Aguila followed that up with a try of her own. CSUN becoming more aggressive score their first try in the 17th minute. Ten minutes later, Wing Ly of UC San Diego scored with another conversion kick from Jaylin Stevenson. It wasn’t until the second half did anyone score again with Wing Ly and Jaylin making the conversion. With bumps and bruises on everyone, CSUN pulled out the two last tries of the game.
The Tritons hope to get all their starters back next week for their 2nd showdown against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, but if this past weekend was any indication, the Tritons have a deep bench to support them throughout their season.
