West Coast Sweep at the National Invite
The West Coast sweeps the Podium at the Inaugural Intercollegiate National Regional Invitational held in Newport, Rhode Island! This weekend the UCSD Sailing Team sent four sailors to compete in the Intercollegiate National Regional Invitational held in Newport, Rhode Island. In this regatta, these sailors competed against some of the best teams in the country with lots of close competition between boats. Beginning on Friday, our four sailors traveled from the airport to Roger Williams University in order to get a practice day in and warm up before their big weekend of sailing. On Saturday morning, they woke up ready to race and sail in the heavy air forecasted to fill in later in the day. On the first race day, the Tritons saw heavy conditions throughout the entire day with Division B sailing in Larks and Division A sailing in FJs. Sailing Larks, an entirely new boat brought various challenges but also so much fun, teaching them a lot about boat handling in varying conditions and the importance of frequent adjustments in controls. The team ended the long day of racing in third place overall and joined UCLA for a sushi dinner! Sunday brought very different conditions than the previous day, with little wind and high temperatures, something these Tritons see often here in Southern California. The sailors were postponed for a couple of hours giving them the opportunity to talk to other teams from places such as Texas, New Hampshire, and more until the sea breeze finally filled in and they got some great races off! These sailors kept their standing throughout the second day and placed third overall in the inaugural regatta! This weekend was filled with lots of hiking, lots of Chinese takeout, and lots of important moments!
