On March 17th the UCSD Women’s Club Soccer team matched head to head against cross town rivals University of San Diego, for the last game of their Spring League. This was a must win for the Tritons if they wanted advance to the Spring Nationals in April. It was on St. Patrick’s Day and the Tritons were feeling lucky. The game started off with the Tritons on their heels, as the USD offense came on strong. In the middle of the half, UCSD’s starting keeper, Maya Daruvala, came out of the box to stop a one against one scenario and in the process she collided with another member of UCSD’s squad. She was down for more than fifteen minutes and the ambulance came to take her to the hospital. Unfortunately, USD had scored off that break away and the Tritons were down 1-0 as they continued the half.

Emotions ran high as the ball switched from USD to UCSD and back as both teams came out to the pitch to win. The first half ended with the Tritons down 1-0 but they were ready to fight and win for Daruvala. The second half started with UCSD dominating the game and shutting down USD’s attacks. UCSD had many chances to score a goal and tie the game, but unfortunately the emotions of the game ran too high and UCSD could not score to win the game. UCSD will still attend the national tournament in April as they were the alternative to a team dropping out. Daruvala did not suffer any permanent injuries. Catch the Tritons playing a two game tournament against San Diego State University for the San Diego Cup!
