UCSD shows up strong at first D1 appearance at annual tournament
The Tritons traveled to Santa Barbara this past weekend to take on four tough opponents. They finished victorious against Colorado State, Santa Clara, and St. Mary's but fell to the tournament winners BYU. In the Colorado State, highlights include Senior Delainey Iles putting up 4 goals and Junior Sophia Terenik with 4 assists. Junior Captain Grace Drawer had 6 ground balls and Junior Captain Kayla Tracy came out with 4 draw controls. Freshman Goalie Kiara Young also had a great two quarters in the cage, saving 4 of 6 shots. UCSD then took on BYU, following close behind for most of the game against one of the strongest D1 teams. However, the gap grew in the fourth quarter with BYU putting up 3 goals and UCSD only with 1 which solidified the Cougar victory. Next was Santa Clara which was a great matchup. Santa Clara got four goals right off the bat, but the Tritons answered back ending the first quarter 3-4. But the Tritons momentum only grew, returning every goal by the Broncos and pulling out the win. Senior Delainey Iles, Junior Sophia Terenik, Junior Captain Kayla Tracy, Freshman Destiny Lewis, and Freshman Nikki Shein all put up goals. Freshman Hope Amend dominated on the ground balls with 5. Freshman Goalie Kate Shanley had a strong game saving 4 of 9 shots. The Tritons last opponent was St. Mary's. The game went quick after racking up 10 goals, moving to running clock, and maintaining possession for most of the game.
