On February 4th, UC San Diego Table Tennis team participated in the Southern California Divisionals in Santa Monica College with more than 30 players divided into 6 teams including Co-ed Varsity, Women’s Varsity, JV1, JV2, JV3, and JV4. Co-ed varsity finished up with 1st place after winning a three-way tie against UC Irvine and Arizona State University. The team lost to Arizona States University 1-3, but it had a great 3-1 victory over UC Irvine with the excellent performances from Anthony Chu, Sudarshan Shyam, Tran Huynh, and Steven Chen with a very tough match against the best player of the opponent school. Women’s Varsity received 1st place finish with a 4-0 record of comfortable win by team captain Tran Huynh, team members Kailin Zhang, Siyu Wang, and new team member Qianhui Li. JV1 defeated UC Irvine 3-0, and lost 2-3 to Arizona States University with close matches by KevinLi Zhang, Ryan Chen, Paavan Guar, and Alex Parson. JV2 and JV3 went undefeated with the record of 3-0 and 4-0, which got them the 1st place in the tournament. Alan Yee, Siyu Wang with new members Evgenii Baranov, Yufan lin, Qitao Wu, and Qianhui Li from JV4 team also did very well with a record of 2-2. Especially, Siyu Wang and Qianhui Li performed pretty well in the double match against Cal Poly SLO and brought a 3-2 victory for UC San Diego. In the single’s tournament, Anthony Chu and Steven Chen took the 1st and 2nd place for Men’s event, and Tran Huynh got 1st place for Women’s event. Overall, UC San Diego Table Tennis team had a wonderful performance at SoCal East Divisional tournament. Both Co-ed Varsity team and Women’s Varsity team were directly qualified to compete in the West Regional Championships which will be held at UC San Diego in February.
