UCSD - Mira Costa Joint Practice

Due to Mira Costa's (MCC) covid restrictions, the Tritons were not able to kick off their league season with a game, instead, it has been postponed until spring quarter. However, the San Diego Rugby community is close-knit, and despite not being able to play a full game, players and coaches from both sides were eager to get some action over the weekend. As a result, we found a way to hold a joint practice that included 30 minutes of full-speed rugby at the end while still abiding by MCC's covid protocols.

To start the day off, the forwards were able to get some much-needed scrum practice against an opposing team. The backs also got the chance to improve, playing some controlled touch that mimicked game situations to the fullest extent possible.

After an hour of individual skill work, both sides were ready to finally get some live rugby in. The MCC boys were big and they hit hard, but the Tritons were able to hit back and we ended up playing a very exciting and instructive 30 minutes of rugby. The score was not kept, since the focus was on getting better.

Overall the Tritons were very happy with the chance to get more experience, and playing against some local talent is always a huge plus. Many of the boys knew each other from past games or various all-star teams, and it was a great reminder of camaraderie that exists within the sport of rugby, even when playing a full game is not possible.
