UCSD beats SDSU in a Thrilling Game!
This past Saturday, October 15th, UCSD and SDSU women’s club soccer teams battled for a win that would either grant UCSD the chance to make it to regionals or not. As the teams gathered on the field, there was rain slowly coming down while thunder and lighting could be heard and seen in the distance. Due to the weather conditions, the game was delayed 30 minutes, but that did not affect the mentality of the UCSD players. As the clock struck 4:15, the referee blew his whistle which would lead to a match like no other. Back and forth, the teams fought to put a score on the board. Both teams fighting for the title of champions for the next 90 minutes. About 30 minutes into the first half, UCSD managed to put a score on the board! The sideline went wild. This was what UCSD needed; an upper hand, and hope that we could win this game and have a chance of making it to regionals. There was a through ball and Elli Sandford toe poked it and megged the goalie, yes you heard that right, MEGGED!! As the first half came to a close, it was apparent that SDSU was stuck in their heads while UCSD was on a high. The second half came rolling around, and SDSU had lit a fire under them. At some points, UCSD struggled but continued to prevail. However, SDSU made it on the scoreboard. With 20 minutes left in the game, UCSD knew that we could not hold anything back. As the time ticked down, a penalty shot was called for UCSD in the 32nd minute. This was our chance. UCSD could be in the lead again. Mia Fava steps up to the plate and waits for the whistle to blow. 3...2…1. The ball blasted to the bottom left corner putting UCSD in the lead again! The energy from UCSD skyrocketed. All we had to do was hold the ball for 12 more minutes. These were the longest 12 minutes of our lives, but in the end, the Tritons pulled through for a 2-1 victory! We are now one step closer to making it into regionals. It was a great game and exactly what we needed!
