UCSD Table Tennis Hosts Scrimmage Against UCLA
While Nationals signified the conclusion of the 2022 NCTTA season, many teams were still eager to continue competing. Among those teams were UCSD Table Tennis and UCLA Table Tennis, who are long-time SoCal rivals and have competed against each other countless times at various divisional, regional, and national tournaments.
UCSD Table Tennis was happy to host this scrimmage at Main Gym! We welcomed nearly 50 players from the two college teams to face off against each other. The tournament format was a Giant Round Robin which included two rounds of round robin play and ended up culminating into 4 separate division levels. Afterwards, a single elimination bracket was played among the top 6 players in each division to establish the champions.
Throughout the day, many guests gathered around the perimeter and at the entrances to spectate. After nearly 7 hours of close matches, a multitude of spirited conversations, and thousands of action-packed pictures, the tournament finally came to an end. The UCSD team performed remarkably well, pulling off many upsets against UCLA! Congrats to the following people who came up on top in their respective division!
Division A:
1st: Feng-Yi Liao (UCSD)
2nd: Alex Wu (UCLA)
3rd: Yuhang Li (UCLA)
Division B:
1st: Jason Lee (UCSD)
2nd: Alex Xue (UCLA)
3rd: Matthew Shen (UCSD)
Division C:
1st: Athena Li (UCSD)
2nd: Wesley Wey (UCLA)
3rd: Kelly Ying (UCLA)
Division D:
1st: Kim Hu (UCLA)
2nd: Randy Chen (UCLA)
3rd: Joe Peetz (UCLA)
This year, due to venue and covid restrictions, only our Varsity, Women’s Varsity, and JV1 teams were able to compete in NCTTA tournaments. So it was especially exciting to be able to give an opportunity to our talented JV2 and JV3 players to represent UCSD at this scrimmage. Likewise, it was also great to meet some new faces on the UCLA team!
We had a lot of fun, UCLA! Looking forward to next time!
