On Wednesday, April 5, UC San Diego’s Women’s Club Soccer team came back from spring break with a bang. At 8:30 pm they faced a familiar opponent, Point Loma Nazarene University. At first it seemed to be an even match with the Tritons finding it hard to break the defensive line of the opponents. Just when tempers were flaring, senior Monica Cuevas and graduate student Miriam Bell scored two bangers back to back, ending the first half at 2-0. When the team first played Point Loma, they struggled to score until late in the second half so this early start for the Tritons was a good omen. After a well-deserved half time break, the Tritons came out strong in the second half. An early goal from senior Shannon McAndrews brought the score to 3-0. About 10 minutes into the half, sophomore Lizzie Blackwell received a yellow card for retaliation but these acts were subsided by the score line. Later in the half, goals were scored by freshman Cynthia Ruiz and sophomore Anais Ortiz, making the final score a whopping 5-0. This victory leaves the Tritons undefeated in the Spring League as they go into the weekend hoping to redeem themselves from last year’s mishap in the 9th annual UC San Diego Invitational.
