Tritons Take the Title: Southwest Division Champions
This past weekend our lady Tritons had an action packed couple of days filled with intense and challenging games. Ultimately, ending with UCSD Women’s Club Water Polo dominating and earning the title of Southwest Division Champions for the first time since 2018!
Our A team started off the weekend as one of the top seeds in the league and demonstrated their dominance in a match up against SDSU A in which the lady Tritons had to win in order to solidify a spot in Nationals. In an intense game that started off close, our Triton ladies fired up their offense in the 3rd quarter and shut down SDSU with a score of 13-8, sealing their place in Nationals. Then came the championship game of the tournament, immediately starting with fire and intensity from both sides. Our girls showed their fluidity as a team against ASU A as they went neck to neck with them for the title of Southwest Division Champions. The entire game had everyone at the edge of their seats, point by point as the two teams kept a close reach on each other. Our lady Tritons used their speed and wit to their advantage and pulled an incredible amount of 5 ejections and 4 5M penalties against the other team. Players Sheccid Duchac, Amanda Martilla, Natalie Kap, and Gaia Hinds all put points on the board. Goalie Lian Lumada had 12 blocks of steel as well. As the game came to a close finish with less than a minute on the clock and a tied score of 9-9, Gaia Hinds took a 5M penalty shot that put the Tritons ahead and ultimately ended up with them winning and becoming Southwest Division Champions for the first time since 2018. This incredible win demonstrated the hard work our lady Tritons have put in for the last two years and they deserve the title of champions. They showed their resilience and never gave up. They now will be heading to Nationals in Alabama, ranked as the 4th seed in the nation, to show them just what UCSD WCWP is made of!
Our UCSD B team also had an amazing weekend as they started off the weekend with some heat, beating ASU B (7-3)! They also had a great game against USD (3-8) as they held their own against this tough opponent and showed their strength as a young team. They also played U of A (5-6), but came up short, losing by just a single point. Overall, our B team did an amazing job this weekend and showed how much they have grown as a team over the past year. We can’t wait to see how much further they will learn and grow as a team during their season next year.
Catch our girls showing the rest of the country just how fierce our lady Tritons are in Alabama for CWPA Nationals May 5th-8th!
