The UC San Diego Club Baseball Tritons started their pre-season with a doubleheader against the University of San Diego Toreros this Sunday, October 9th. The Tritons were sharp all day, sweeping the doubleheader by winning the first game 6-1 and the second game 13-1.
In the first game, senior Kevin Nieh started his first game of the year and pitched excellently to limit USD to no hits and only 2 baserunners in the first 3 innings of the game. During the last 4 innings, pitchers Raymond Young, Louis Westfall, and Matt Demarest were able to shut down the Torero bats and hold them to only one run. The Triton offense started off quietly, but the bats showed some life in the 3rd inning with key RBIs from Seamus Beyerle and Alec Lopez to put the Tritons on top 2-0. Freshmen Richard Mendoza and Kyle Tanaka came up with key situational hitting in the 7th inning to pick up their first career RBIs and give the Tritons some insurance runs on their way to a 6-1 victory.
In the second game, the Tritons came out swinging by scoring 3 runs in the first inning off of RBIs from freshmen Miguel Moreno and Alex Uy and Senior Alec Lopez. UC San Diego added one more in the 2nd inning before exploding in the 5th for 6 runs to put up a 10-1 lead. The Tritons added 3 more runs in the 7th inning with the rest of the scoring highlighted by RBIs from Kelvin Murillo, Alex Uy, Zeke Haenelt, Shane Sudsbury and 4 more from Alec Lopez. Rookie pitchers Raymond Tarin, Yuki Komine, Peter Frame, and Richard Mendoza as well as second year pitcher John Driscoll silenced the Toreros, leading to a 13-1 UC San Diego win and a sweep of the doubleheader.
These games also served as the final part of UC San Diego Club Baseball’s tryout process and we would like to congratulate Ray Estrada, Peter Frame, James Furukawa, Zeke Haenelt, Yuki Komine, Alec Lopez, Richard Mendoza, Miguel Moreno, Kelvin Murillo, Kyle Tanaka, Raymond Tarin, Jesus Torres, Alex Uy, Louis Westfall, Hunter Woodruff, and Raymond Young for making the fall roster for the 2016-17 season!
