The final regular season College NSSA surfing contest was held last weekend just south of the Huntington Beach Pier. The contestants braved the elements as the contest was held in windy and rainy (but fun!) conditions both Saturday and Sunday.
The first day of competition took place on saturday in what ended up being surprisingly fun and evidently favorable surf conditions for the UCSD tritons. The 2-3 foot surf saw most of the team advancing through the first and second rounds which resulted in the Tritons being tied for first place after day one! Day 2 was hard fought as the level of surfing increased each round. Standout performances include surfers J.D. Lewis, Owen Cockerill, and Captain Michael Cassen (who got stung by a stingray right before his heat and still surfed!) all making it to round 3, while Captain Logan Laubach made it to the semi-finals and super star Frankie Seely made it to the finals in both Womens Shortboard and Longboard. The brilliant performance by the Tritons led the team to their best result of the year, a 2nd place behind UCSC.
The National Championships, which both UCSD teams have qualified for, will be the final contest of the year and takes place the weekend of June 16-18.
