Last Friday the Tritons were up against Cal State Long Beach for the last home game of the season! After taking a well needed spring break, the Tritons came back with a vengeance.
The match started with UCSD in a two goal hole, forcing them to step up their game and bring the heat. Attacker Danielle Viviani dominated the motion offense and led our attack with our newer players in the game. Our midfield lead a constant draw control streak thanks to Janet Gleason and Kellen Peddicord. At the end of the first half, the Lady Tritons were in the lead 7-3, with amazing assisted shots from Audrey Nunez and Demi Greiner. Overall, the first half game play was intense and fluid on all parts of the field.
During the second half of the match, the Tritons were slowly unwinding. Long Beach’s main attackers were running through our defense and midfield re-defense, speeding past many of our players. Senior, Kylie Sagisi, held her own causing over three turnovers and leading our core defense. What was ultimately the downfall for UCSD was stamina and conditioning levels. The team, once possession was made, were able to keep it for a while, but once a turnover was made it was quickly turned against them. The Tritons managed to score one more goal in this half and allowed Long Beach to rack up their points. The final score of this match ended with a Triton loss, 8-10. Although losses are painful, the team’s morale was high all throughout the game and agreed it was a hard fought, fun game!
A post-game ceremony was held honoring the seniors on the team captains Demi Greiner and Kylie Sagisi as well as Maritza Martinez, Jenna Hazen, Vita Grossman, and Jen Daluz. The season is now ending for UCSD Women’s Lacrosse, but was extremely rewarding and exciting!
