This past weekend the UCSD Women’s Lacrosse team swept the Santa Barbara Shootout, retaining their crown ina special manner, as they were undefeated champions! The Tritons faced off against Humboldt State, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and University of Nevada, Reno.
In their first game the Tritons dominated Humboldt State with a landslide victory of 22-6! This game was a fun one for newcomer players. Many players scored their first goals of the season including: Maritza Martinez, Blair McGarrigle, and Aya Rosenfield. Senior, Jenna Hazen, got to take the draw for her first time, and absolutely crushed it! Danielle Gelsinger got a chance to play midfield and dominated the field.
For the second game of the weekend, the Tritons faced off against previous playoff-winners University of Nevada, Las Vegas beating them with a score of 16-5. Defender, Demi Greiner got a chance to play midfield for the first time since sophomore year. She proved to be a force on the attack and draw, and scored her first goal of the season! 9 different players scored the total 16 goals, demonstrating an immense team effort! Goalie, Maria Fernanda McCavitt-Malvido had an impressive 3 saves!
For the final game, the Tritons faced off against their toughest competition yet, against UN Reno. Having lost to Reno in the first round of playoffs, the Tritons were ready for a battle. After a stalemate in the first half, the Tritons pushed ahead to a victory of 17-12. This game was the Tritons best of the weekend! On the draw, Audrey Nunez and Jiyoung Yun, snatched almost every single ball, allowing the Tritons to dominate the attack end easily. On offense, attacker, Danielle Viviani, was a driving force. Midfielders, Nicole Goodwin and Michaela Juels, were assisting queens! The attack was virtually unstoppable against Reno. Defender, Aidan Ryan and Jovelle Torres, were brick walls against the Reno attack. Aidan, caused many forced turnovers and was extremely helpful in the transition.
All in all, the Tritons were happy to not only come out of the tournament as undefeated, but an undefeated record overall (5-0). It appears as if the Tritons have a good chance at attending (and maybe winning) playoffs this year, with 5 players ranked as the top scores in the WWLL (Nicole Goodwin, Michaela Juels, Janet Gleason, Jiyoung Yun and Danielle Viviani). Best of all, the Tritons truly came together as a team and showed they are still a force to be reckoned with (thanks to Coach Gabby).
