UC San Diego finished their regular season this past weekend with a conference series vs in-town rival USD. In game 1, Yousef Koutnik took to the mound to try and start the Tritons on the right foot. He did his job and held USD to only 2 unearned runs in a complete game, allowing only 1 hit and 0 walks while striking out 9. Backing the dominant pitching performance, was a great offensive display that saw the Tritons put up 7 runs and win the first game 7-2.
In game 2, Senior Kevin Nieh took the mound for the last time ever in a Triton’s uniform and pitched a dominant scoreless two innings. The Triton offense was able to scrape across 4 runs off of hits from Bobby Young and Shane Sudsbury, and this was all UC San Diego’s pitching staff needed to win the game. Yuki Komine pitched 4 shutout innings and the game was closed by Senior Bobby Young, making his first pitching appearance since his Freshman year, to seal the win for the Tritons 4-1.
In the final game of the series and the season, UC San Diego sent Shane Aldas to the mound to try and secure the sweep. He pitched a scoreless 3 innings to begin the game and left with an 8-0 lead after an early offensive explosion for the Tritons. UC San Diego showed off their pitching depth as 6 different pitchers successfully shutdown the Toreros, only allowing them to score in one of the nine innings. The offense was also in full effect as UC San Diego was able to tack onto their early lead and win the game 14-5 off of big hits from Shane Sudsbury, Hunter Woodruff, Shane Aldas, Matt Demarest, and Jared Vitug.
By sweeping USD, UC San Diego Club Baseball finished their season with a 6-9 record but were able to finish strong, going 5-1 in their last 6 games. We would like to shout out all of the seniors who played their last game for the Tritons this weekend. Shane Sudsbury, Bobby Young, Matt Demarest, Kevin Nieh, and Yuki Komine: thank you all for your hard work and dedication to this program, you will all be greatly missed. Best of luck with all of your future endeavors!
