Tritons End the Regular Season with a Big Win Over USC
With finals week coming to a close, it was time for Spring Break. But before the Tritons could have a well deserved break, they had to play in their last regular season game at home on March 20th. It was also Senior Day, so the team celebrated their one senior Gillian Husovsky. Their opponent, USC, had made the drive down from Los Angeles to San Diego to play SDSU in the morning and UCSD in the afternoon. This was an inter-division game as the Trojans are a Division 1 team and UCSD a Division 2. Although a little scared of facing a D1 team, their nerves didn’t hinder their play. The Tritons came out strong and with back to back wins on the draw, made a quick 3-0 lead in the first few minutes. Double teams shut down the ball in transition, allowing the Tritons to keep the ball on attack for the majority of the first quarter. Numerous shooting space calls for both teams were made, allowing a large sum of free position shots. Freshman Lindsay Rubin had 7 saves and only let in 5 goals all game. Defense acceled in communication and bodying up on players driving. On attack, connections on fast breaks by the Tritons led to 20 goals in the back of the net. Junior captain Delainey Iles scored five goals, with freshman Emily Schittino and sophomore Sophia Terrenik following with four a piece. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Tracy caused turnovers all over the field with strong redefends on attack and double teaming ball on defense. She also got to even defend and check the goalie. Overall, Sunday’s game was a huge success and an amazing way to end the season and celebrate our senior Gillian.
