Triton Ladies Take on the North: UC Davis Invitational
This past weekend our Triton ladies traveled far across California, up North to UC Davis, to put their skills to the test before their upcoming league tournaments. The Lady Tritons team broke up into “A” and “B” teams, both facing fierce competition throughout the entire weekend. In this exciting pre-season invitational both teams pushed their limits and worked together to show their Triton pride and polo passion.
The UCSD-A team started off the weekend with an intense game against UCSB-A. They fought hard the entire game, showing their resilience every second of the clock. They pushed to end the 4th quarter tied (11-11), entering a sudden death period in which the first team to score wins the game. Kimmie Holland pushed to the goal and scored the golden goal, helping win the game for the Triton ladies (12-11 OT). The UCSD-A team then went on to play Cal Poly SLO, putting up a solid fight, ending with a score of (9-13). On Sunday, the ladies played two masters teams, Peacocks (4-18) and Oakland (6-15). Our ladies worked together to put up a strong defense against both teams, communicating and pushing themselves both games. They put up a phenomenal fight against these veteran collegiate players, never once wavering. Kimmie Holland led this tournament with a whopping 11 goals scored. Following Holland, was Gaia Hinds, with 8 fantastic goals. Meanwhile, Triton goalie Lian Lumada showed just how solid of a defense our Triton ladies hold with 38 blocks. The entire team played phenomenal all weekend, pushing till the very end, showing their resilience and strength against every opponent.
The UCSD-B team also put up a competitive fight this weekend against their opponents: UCSB-B (3-13), UCD (4-6), Fresno State (3-18), and Cal Poly SLO-B (4-11). They may have lost their games, but they showed their ability to work together as a team all weekend and focus on communication. They held their own against very strong teams and played amazing defense, demonstrating to the teams that they would not go down without a fight. Isabella Gerloni led the team with 5 goals, and Hanna Bush came in with a close second of 4 goals. Alex Bussey had solid defense with 18 blocks. Although the B team's offense struggled against these strong teams, they focused on their defense and worked together as a team to hold off these teams from scoring any further.
Our Triton ladies demonstrated their resilience and strength this weekend, no matter what opponent they were faced with. Next up, our Triton ladies will be making their way to the University of Arizona to compete in their first league tournament. Stay tuned to hear as our ladies make their mark on their road to nationals.
