It was a tough battle against Cal Poly SLO this past weekend on November 6th, as the Tritons and Mustangs fought for the win during a mini-tournament on San Diegan turf. A thick fog encompassed the field as players positioned themselves for the start of the game. With the sharp sound of the whistle, the game was on and possession was mediated back and forth for the first quarter of the game. Sabrina Gonzalez (#18) received a transfer ball from the center midfielders and accelerated up the sidelines only to be thrown to the ground by a fierce blow from a Mustang. The Mustang received a yellow card for unnecessary aggression as Gonzalez hobbled off the field with support from her teammates and coach who attended to her needs. Stunned for a moment, the Tritons got their heads back in the game. The opposition was strong as the Mustangs encroached into the Triton’s circle and did a quick power play, scoring the first goal of the game in the first half. As the second half began, the Tritons pushed hard against Mustang defense, possessing the ball for most of the second half. A couple shots by midfielders Vinnu Bhardwaj (#44) and Vikas Chinnappa (#45) barely missed the goal as forward Rachel To (#1) received a few tips, only to be met by the goalie’s pads. The game ended with a 2-0 final score with Mustangs with the win.
