The 46th annual San Diego Men’s Water Polo Invitational
The 46th annual San Diego Men’s Water Polo Invitational hosted by San Diego Mesa College was a successful tournament! This was the first tournament for our A team to really solidify itself in the preseason before our season’s campaign begins. With this in mind, we had an extremely insightful weekend to improve weaknesses and develop as a team. This invitational was a round-robin tournament where every team played each other.
Our first matchup was against San Diego Mesa College. Off to a slow start, things began to pick up in our offense as we made more plays towards our center and we began to increase the tempo. Our offense started to create more movement allowing options to open up for our outside shooters. The end result of the game was a 26-7 victory.
Our second match of the day would be against conference opponent Arizona State University. A high scoring first quarter resulted in us being quite close with the Sun Devils. This high scoring first quarter quickly went lopsided in our favor. After taking the lead, our defense held them tight the rest of the game. We ended the game with a 24-11 victory.
Our third and final match of the day would be against Cerritos College. The first quarter was overwhelmingly in favor of Cerritos College. They had a large lead going into the second quarter of the game and morale was low. A lapse in defense and offensive capability led to what should have been a tight game in our favor. We slowly clawed our way back with some very tight defense and successful offensive drives to come within 2 goals of Cerritos College. Unfortunately, we could not finish out the game and the end result was a loss, 13-16
The end result of our tenure in this invitational was a record of 2-1. This tournament really highlighted some weaknesses but developed our team in preparation for our fast approaching conference matchups.
