Southwest Regionals 2023
Good day Dragon Coalition fans, we’re back with another update from an exciting weekend in Santa Barbara! Your favorite dragons headed out for our second tournament of the post-season– Regionals! We began the weekend bright and early as per usual playing our pool games, where we went 2-1 against some fun competitors. I hear that a highlight of these first games was some fun spirit of the game from Northern Arizona’s team, and a shocking, daring, never-before-seen huck into the trees on the side of the field from rookie-going-on-handler Sophia “Aera Aera'' Fitch. Let’s stick to saving the trees, not trying to recruit them to play Ultimate Frisbee. We headed into pre-quarters to close out the day, facing Santa Barbara’s Burning Skirts, and lost the game but got some good intense reps in. To close out our night, the DCO’s headed to Dylan “Ravine” Mullaney’s place to bond, eat some dinner, and watch a beautiful sunset on the beaches of Ventura. We’re forever grateful for the hospitality your family’s shown us all season, Ravine, and it was just the recharge we needed to prepare for Day 2 of the weekend!
On Sunday morning we drove back up to the fields through the beautiful sunrise along the coast, and cleated up for our first game against UCLA. Glitter on, sneks on the arms, and spirits high, we played our best, and the game was an intense matchup with lots of victories and proud moments. Our offense impressed everyone by playing with better flow and execution than we’d seen all season, and our defense went absolutely feral for some turns and breaks. The game ended in a loss, unfortunately meaning that we will not advance to Nationals this season. Yet, we kept our heads high and fought hard in another game against Cal Blue to finish the weekend. We played some fun Ultimate, and everyone got a chance to leave it all out on the field. Highlights include three lines based on height– Short Stack line, Fun Size line, and the Tall line. If we’d been successful in recruiting that tree on Saturday, we know which line it would join! That’s a wrap on our season this year, and it’s been a fun ride. A special shoutout to our seniors who we love so much, Denika “Sonic” Hallin, Sofia “Katana” Lake, Kate “Guava” Lindeman, and grad student Chantal “Dzaddy” Rabay. We couldn’t have had this season without you all, and we hope you all come back to visit, help out, and play with us some more! We’re so proud of our DCO’s, and can’t wait to see you again next season. Until next time, DCO, YOU KNOW!
