The University of California, San Diego Air Squids B and C team competed at the SoCal Mixer 2018, a one day tournament in Claremont. Squid Lite and Ultralite exhibited a stronger sense of the game as they faced off against Division 3 national caliber A teams. Weeks of rigorous practice and the experience gained from previous tournaments paid off in Squid Lite going 3-2 and coming 3rd at the tournament. With a slightly new roster this time around, Lite got off to a shaky start on O, failing to find the rhythm and focus displayed in the past, but still managed to pick it up mid game with help from a very strong D line to get a a good lead against Caltech AfterMath, one of the three D3 teams in the southwest region. Caltech recovered late in the game to take the game to a double game point scenario but the O line finally showed some poise and won the game 10-8. The second game against Ultralite saw some friendly competition as Squid lite won the game 11-3. UCLA B put up some competition but squid lite demystified their unique vert stack defense to beat them 8-4. Lite then faced it’s two toughest opponents and lost two hard fought matches 4-11 to claremont and occidental, showing great potential against strong defenses at points but ultimately cracking under the unfamiliar defensive pressure. Blessed with a young roster Ultralite gave the rookies a chance to run the game against some strong opponents as they lost some greatly contested games to Squid Lite, claremont, UCLA B and occidental. Utralite found their focus in the final game where they took Caltech to Universe losing 8-9. Both teams came out of the tournament more prepared to improve and face hard teams in the ultimate goal of winning Sectionals in April.
