The NSSA College State Championships of surfing took place on the weekend of March 2-4 at Seaside Reef in Cardiff by the Sea.
The first day of competition took place on Friday in what proved to be very challenging, sub-par conditions. The 1-2 foot surf (at best) unfortunately led many UCSD surfers to being eliminated early, but there were still some positives as the surfers were able to enjoy their Fridays away from campus, basking in the sun on what would have to be considered a warm San Diego winter day. Saturday and Sunday had slightly bigger and therefore more contestable surf which made for an exciting finish to the competition.
UCSD standout performances include Seaside Reefs very own J.D. Lewis and freshman Cole Clisby, making Semi and quarter finals respectively in the men’s division, and Frankie Seely for winning the Women’s shortboard division with a dominating performance.
The team will be looking for another solid showing at the final regular season contest of the year this upcoming weekend (March 10-11) at Huntington Beach.
