The University of California San Diego Air Squids B team began the season with a tournament in Santa Barbara. Typically, since this tournament is week 1, we tend to attract a large turnout of players, giving a large variety of players at least a few points of playing time. We divided the playing time such that everyone would get a chance to play, but we would also give ourselves an opportunity to win each game.
Air Squids B began the tournament with a tough, close loss to Stanford B (final score 13-10). We then raised the intensity to a whole new level, defeating UC Santa Cruz B 11-2. Going into halftime the score was 7-0, as Air Squids B played a perfect defensive half. The day was then concluded with a tough, hard fought loss to UC Davis B, with a final score of 9-7. Having gone 1-2 on Saturday, Air Squids B was set to compete against the Santa Barbara All-stars (the best high school ultimate players in the Santa Barbara area) for 5th place. Air Squids B dominated the game, winning by a score of 13-5. All in all, a solid weekend for the Air Squids B team, as dramatic improvement was shown offensively throughout the tournament, particularly as many of the rookies learned to relax with the disc in their hands.
