Santa Barbara Invitational
Dragon Coalition saw an amazing weekend in Santa Barbara last weekend, complete with 3 wins and a 4th place final finish. In the first regular season tournament, the team was excited to see how all their new players would handle the heat of the fiery competition. As expected, we saw amazing performances from some of our returners such as Jessie “Saber” Finkelor and Marlo “Valen” Ramada who both had incredible hucks and overall offensive movement. Some of the rookies also had incredible showings such as Audrey “BATS” Schneider with amazing deep catches and Annika “Flash” Ross with some shut down defense. Overall, D-Co had an amazing weekend finishing with 3 wins and 2 losses.
On Saturday, D-Co (seeded 4th) saw their first game against Wisconsin (seeded 9th). After a game with no breaks, D-Co was tied 8-8 with one point left to play. A heroic end gave D-co the win on an upwind, defensive break. The second game was sure to be an exciting one with D-co playing Davis (seeded 5th). High energy from the sidelines as well as incredible defense from returners Denika “Sonic” Hallin and Emma “Gaia” Toussaint gave D-co a few early breaks leading the team to lead at halftime. The momentum carried as we saw crazy catches and bid attempts from our rookies like Liana “Rango” Kitchel. D-co ended the game with an 11-7 win.
Sunday is for bracket play! Quarter finals against Utah was a great game for the team to open up the lines and let newer players have a chance to play. Rookie Josie “Bumpa” O’toole came down with a crazy throw that wasn’t even meant for her and threw the disc into the endzone for the assist. D-co ended with a win 10-7. Next game was sure to be a doozie. Semi-finals versus Carleton (seeded 1st). Excited by the chance to play such a great team, D-co put their hearts on the field and gave it everything they had. Highlight of the game was definitely seeing rookie Cassidy “Pharaoh” Morgan skying a player who probably stands at least 6’4” in height. Energy on the team still remained high even with a 15-3 loss. Game for 3rd place was against the host team, Santa Barbara. After a 10-5 loss for D-co, the team came in 4th place, holding seed. The team is incredibly proud of their performance in their first regular season tournament and can’t wait for Pres Day.
