The University of California San Diego Air Squids competed in their second tournament of the 2018 regular season this President’s Day weekend. President’s Day Invite is a three day tournament hosted by UCSD each year and it brings together some of the best ultimate teams from across the country. The Air Squids were in a strong pool consisting of Oregon State, Cornell, Washington, SDSU, and UCSD themselves. Although their 0-6 record to start the tournament did not meet their expectations, the Air Squids learned from this experience and used their disappointment to fuel themselves in their final game to get a win against Utah State. Throughout the tournament rookie Jules “Xylo” Fogerty showed great composure and heart, getting several lay-out D’s and earning himself MVP. While injuries and the youth and inexperience of the team has caused some struggles early on this season, UCSD is confident that they can continue to grow and be playing at peak performance come sectionals.
