UCSD Women’s Rugby kicked off the preseason this weekend with a friendly against CSU Long Beach. The Tritons fielded numerous first time players who helped pull in the teams first win. Rookie and first year Maria Bellamacina scored the team’s first try and put the Tritons up in the first quarter. Veteran center Jaylin Stevenson scored an overwhelming 3 tries securing a hat trick in the first game of the preseason. First year rookie Alex Beckett also added another try to the teams win. The tritons kept a formidable defensive effort for the first fifty minutes of the game and kept Long Beach scoreless for most of the game before allowing Long Beach to score 3 tries—one in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Despite Long Beach’s scores the Tritons held on and secured a 36-16 win to begin the season.
