SD Beat by the Beach
On Sunday October 19th, with an ugly close to the UC Santa Barbara tournament, the UC San Diego Women’s Club Soccer team played against Cal State Long Beach and lost by a long shot. The first goal of the game came from a beautiful free kick scored by senior Gabby Ley. Perhaps due to a feeling of security, San Diego was caught off guard by a through ball that was hit to a forward on the Long Beach squad. The forward took the ball to goal and finished with a shot to the back post. Beach was able to get one more goal in the first half with a shot coming off after some confusion between the San Diego goalie Jahya Burke and her back line that left the Beach forward with an open shot at the top of the box. In the second half, things did not get much better for San Diego. Beach was able to put another goal away off of a shot, and not long after was awarded a questionable penalty that raised the score to 4-1. San Diego was awarded a penalty as well, bringing the score up to 4-2, but before the end of the game Long Beach was able to get a strong finish off of a rebound from a cross in towards the goal. With a final score of 5-2, the game came to an end, leaving San Diego with a long ride home to digest the game and think of how to improve before next week’s game against Irvine, which will either secure their spot at regionals or bring an early end to their fall season.
