First half barrage buries UC Irvine

After collecting three points in Riverside on Saturday, UC San Diego looked to extend their winning streak to three on Sunday morning against UC Irvine on a freshly-lined Warren Field. UC San Diego came out strong and quickly won a penalty kick after Captain Quinn Frantzen was tripped up on a darting run into the UCI penalty box. However, perennial scoring threat Francisco Salinas was unable to convert. UC Irvine was not out of the woods as only minutes later Salinas redeemed himself by coolly finishing a pass from senior midfielder Kazu Otani.

Within the next 10 minutes, UC San Diego tripled their lead with goals from senior striker Emil Kirov and another from Salinas, this time heading home a free kick from Captain Henry Cullen. Kirov returned to the scoresheet later in the half by converting a second Triton penalty kick. Senior Adam Zeman finished off the first half onslaught just before halftime by combining with senior Jonathan Clausen in the UCI penalty area.

Irvine only managed a one goal response after San Diego failed to clear a deep ball from their goal area. A scoreless second half meant the game ended 5-1 in favor of the home side.

UC San Diego will have rematches with both Riverside and Irvine this Friday and Saturday respectively and look to continue this run of form in anticipation of their matches with San Diego State the following week.
