San Diego Falls in Buzzer-Beater Heartbreaker to Santa Barbara
After 3.5 hours of driving, hectic Los Angeles traffic, and a day of intense heat, UC San Diego Women’s Club Soccer stood strong against Santa Barbara under the lights on Saturday night. Throughout the game San Diego’s defense played their top game, showing beautiful defensive goal blocks from both senior Gabby Ley and freshman Hannah Hurd. Midfield juniors Abby Chin and Monica Cuevas ran an intense middle game, shutting down Santa Barbara’s efficient passing system. Holding Santa Barbara to a sweat dripping 0-0 game until the 89th minute, a lucky outside shot from the SB offense left San Diego not even enough time to complete a kickoff before the game came to an end. Although a tough loss faced, San Diego headed home proud of their effort and newfound teamwork that flowered from the intensity of Saturday night’s game.
