What a fantastic weekend. This Saturday and Sunday, November 21 through the 22nd, the Psychos hosted Kendra Fallon Memorial Tournament with 12 teams from around the region coming to play in sunny San Diego. For the Psychos’ part, hosting a tournament meant arriving at 6:30am to set up the fields, tents, and tables of food before continuing warm-ups.

The first game on Saturday against SLO-Motion (Cal Poly Ultimate), was all about learning. The Psychos worked on the triangle mark and played awesome man defense to win the game 11-5.

In game two University of Arizona (Scorch), and the actual sun, turned up the heat but the Psychos pulled away early with a 5-0 lead. At which point the coaches decided to put on a rookie line, and the rookies were so good they just had to win it with some excellent defense from Avery “Starsky” Jones and some fantastic offensive plays from Erika “Tempo” Kaji. After taking half 6-1 and some excellent defense from Captain Julianna “Terra” Jordan. After another successful rookie point a little later, the Psychos finish the game 11-2.

The third game was against Cal State Long Beach’s 8 person squad and despite all the running, the Psychos came out early with a 6-2 lead and just charged forward from there with Maria “Fluxx” Zavala and Rachel “Rue” Ling’s killer defense helping finish the game 9-3.

Game four against UCLA-B the Psychos came out running taking pushing the score to 4-0 before adding another rookie point. The point to take half, left the score at 7-0, but Christina ‘Dryft’ Huynh with a knee injury. Lots of love headed her way. The Psychos end the game with an 11-2 win making the team undefeated for day 1.

Day two started with a win over UC Santa Barbara’s (Burning Skirts) with Rachel “Rue” Ling scoring with a Callahan (catching a disc as an interception in the opponent’s endzone by a defensive player for a point) to put the score at 5-0. The Skirts fought to come back, but the Psychos triumphed winning the game 9-4. Shout out to Juliana “Terra” Jordan for excellent hucks (long throws).

The next game vs. ASU “Caliente” was a good chance for the Psychos to show off their defensive skills during some long points. Shout out to Maria “Fluxx” Zavala for an awesome grab and Bridget “Twerk” Zeiger for excellent offense helping the team secure a 7-1 win.

In game three vs. the USC Hellions the Psychos had a slow start going point for point with the Hellions until 3-3, then taking off from there eventually taking the game with a final rookie point to end the game 10-4 and head for the finals.

The finals against UCLA’s A-team started out with UC San Diego behind 0-3 and the coaches, disappointed, put on a defensive line, but the D-Line scored. From there the Psychos continued to gained some momentum and excitement but the game was still a hard fought battle with incredible effort from every single person both on the sideline and on the field. The Psychos won the game 7-6 to win a tournament for the first time in at least four years.
