UC San Diego Men’s Club Soccer opened league play on Sunday, October 4th, against USD at Valley Field. UC San Diego came out on fire, but could not capitalize on the early chances they had created. USD took the lead off of a defensive error midway through the first half. UC San Diego showed its character and responded minutes later with a gorgeous counter-attack. Aric “Messi” Diesen ran through the USD defense like a runaway train and found Jonathan “Laurel” Clausen who slotted the ball into the net and the two teams went in to halftime tied 1-1. In the second half, UC San Diego settled in and began to sustain possession. A key substitution by player-coach Emil “RUSH PIKE” Kirov took Quinn “Diversity Hire” Frantzen out of the game following his missed penalty kick and inserted Kenan “Giraffe Legs” Mesic. Kenan scored minutes later and the rout was on. Jonah “Drew” Gooden capped the game by finishing a rebound and UC San Diego picked up all 3 points. UC San Diego sits atop of the league and level on points with SDSU and will travel this weekend to play UC Riverside.
