In 97 degree heat, UC San Diego Men’s Club Soccer continued its league dominance with a gritty win Saturday against UC Riverside. UCSD came out and created chances from the sound of the first whistle. The break through occurred early in the first half when Quinn “Theo Walcott” Frantzen combined with Francisco Salinas and slotted a goal into the net. Riverside leveled the score to take the teams into halftime tied at 1-1. UCSD opened the scoring in the second half by fighting for a bouncing ball in the box. Quinn Frantzen poked the ball into the top corner from 5 yards out to give UCSD the lead. Jonah “Nah” Gooden came up big and blasted a free kick under the wall and into the goal within minutes to increase UCSD’s lead. Riverside somehow scored another goal, but key defensive substitutions by UCSD allowed them to park the bus and secure the 3-2 victory. UCSD will look to continue their dominance over Riverside when the two teams meet again next week.
