    Magic Mountain Melee 2022

The weekend of the 26th of February, involved the Air Squids Ultimate Frisbee club sending two teams to the “Magic Mountain Melee” in Santa Clarita, California. The tournament saw: Air Squids Lite or ‘B’ and Air Squids Select or ‘C’ teams represent UCSD. Most players rolled into town on Friday night and stayed at the Red Roof Inn about 40 minutes from the fields where we would be playing for the next two days. Both Lite and Select performed as expected and even fared better than anticipated. Team Lite was able to break seed and placed third after being seeded second, while Select showed massive improvement amongst all players yet was unable to break their underdog seed of seventh.

Saturday 2/26 went about as expected as Lite went 2-2 for the day with close games being lost due to the top seeds, and Team Select, unfortunately, dropping all four of their games that day. Despite neither team having a great day, we were able to keep spirits high as both teams were gaining confidence together and steadily showing greater team chemistry. Later that night however, morale was still low. Caused by team captain Pembo looking as though he may be unable to play the following day and the shared pain by most team members from the tough performances of the afternoon.

Rolling up to the field on Sunday with an earlier start time for games than the day before,

the energy level was lower than it should have been. Team Lite had a bye for the first game of the day; so they rallied together for a full sideline in support of the Team Select game versus ASU. With the two teams combined, the energy was taken through the roof in preparation for the highly anticipated Lite Vs Select game to come after. As the seeding difference was quite large it was no surprise that Lite came out on top, ending Team Select’s day with a loss against their own. Unsurprisingly, Team Lite carried their momentum and went on to win some more with victories over UCLA and UCSB to finish on the podium in third place.
