January 31.2020 UCSD at Mustang Ball
The UCSD Dancesport Team started off 2020 strong at Cal Poly SLO’s annual competition, the Mustang Ball. Despite being one of the largest competitions of the year, the Tritons did extremely well. Notable results include Matthew Panelo and Emily Liu, who swept the Bronze Standard division, placing 1st in Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and Quickstep, as well as 3rd in the Silver Waltz. New members showed their prowess as well, with Thunder Bird and Alise Bruevich placing in Newcomer (1st in Waltz, 2nd in Tango); Alise and Liam McDonough placed 2nd in Newcomer Quickstep. Louis Zapien and Ines Cerf placed 3rd in Newcomer Waltz as well! In addition, several members excelled in the Rookie/Vet division--Alise and Joan Valls (3rd in Waltz, Rumba, Cha cha, and Jive), Paige Wasniak and Thunder (1st in Waltz), Liam and Paige (3rd in Quickstep), and Louis and Emily Zhang (3rd in Tango and Quickstep, 2nd in Jive). UCSD continued to do well during the evening session, and Paige and Thunder placed 3rd in Beginner Blues. The night ended as the team participated in the Team Match for school spirit, and watched more experienced dancers compete in the Open Events. The highlight of the night was a 5 dance Latin showcase by professionals Roman Drobotov and Liya Kazbekova.
