UC San Diego Men’s Club Soccer’s Successful Arizona Weekend Getaway
The UC San Diego Men’s Club Soccer team opened their spring season with a weekend getaway to Arizona. On Saturday, UC San Diego played Grand Canyon University in Casa Grande, AZ at the sports complex that is used by the Real Salt Lake Academy. The Tritons fell behind 1-0 after some unnecessary passes and horrid defense. Kazu “Honda” Otani found Pepe “Meme” TP for the opening goal. Jon Clausen “Bowling” was brought down in the box and “Cap’n” Quinn Frantzen slotted the PK home to put UC San Diego up 2-1. Kazu “KAZZUUUUUU” Otani banged in another from 25 yards out and Pepe wrapped up a brace with UCSD’s 4th goal. The Tritons left Casa Grande with all three points and a great start to their spring league campaign.
The following afternoon UC San Diego drove to Tucson to face the University of Arizona. In the shadow of the D1 football stadium the two teams played to a scoreless draw at half. Following a lapse in defensive communication between the two UC San Diego captains, Arizona went up 1-0 off of a weak cross and header connection. UCSD roared right back as Kazu Otani played in Quinn Frantzen, who cut open the Arizona defense like a hot knife through butter, with a well-placed pass to Pepe “MEME” TP who tapped in the orb right in front of the goal. The Tritons secured the win with a bang. Henry “Hot Coffee” Cullen stepped up to take a free kick from 28 yards out. Henry stood over the ball like a more attractive Ronaldo and hit the ball with the finesse of Beckham in his prime. The Tritons held out and secured a 2-1 win against the Wildcats in this friendly scrimmage.
