It was an overall success for the UCSD surf team at the 4th event for the NSSA college season, as many surfers progressed far in the competition, highlighted by Frankie Seely’s second place finish. The event was held in Huntington Beach at the end of 9th street, just north of the pier. Though the first day of the competition on Saturday provided difficult conditions, largely because of the wind, on Sunday the winds died down allowing for some good 3-4 foot waves for the finals.
Even through poor conditions on the first day the UCSD’s men’s surf team was able to persevere. Matt Honey, along with new team member Drew Watumull, passed their first round heats. Owen Cockerill and Kent Pinz shredded their way to round three. Kent Pinz is pictured in the photo attached making an amazing cut back in his round three heat. While captain Logan Laubach earned himself a spot in the quarterfinals with some amazing surfing.
Not only did the men’s team make for a great event but so did the girls. Both Emily Collins and Rachel Wood made it to quarterfinals earning more points for the team. As well as Frankie Seely making it to the finals for the 4th time and taking home the second place trophy.
