Hitting the Road: UCSD takes on ASU
The UC San Diego Women’s Rugby team traveled to Tempe, Arizona to face off against the ASU Sun Devils on February 13th. ASU is a strong team, but the Tritons gave them their all. The primarily rookie team continues to look better each game. Megan Wu scored not one but two tries! This was her first try and also UCSD’s first try of the season. Sana Gold secured her first conversion of the game as well! The forwards showed their skill and strength in the scrums and held their own against the Sun Devils. Special mentions to our flanker and 8-man duo, Morgan Bundy and Chloe Belman, who both had multiple key tackles and made strong breaks through the defensive line. The backs also showed off their improving speed and passing skills! Scrum-half Lara Leitz and Fly-half Sarah Overington both led the back line swiftly and effectively. Lara made an impressive tackle, catching up to one of ASU’s fastest players and knocking them out of bounds to gain possession for UCSD. Raquel Goli, who played her normal spot as a fearless wing for the Tritons, also joined the forwards in the latter end of the game to play as a flanker, showcasing her strength and versatility. The dedication of the coaches and players shined throughout the whole game despite it being only the second official game played by UCSD in almost 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
ASU also played hard on the field and showcased their experience and speed from early in the game. The Sun Devils ended up beating the Tritons 77-12. The game was exciting and full of energy from start to finish, and the young UCSD ruggers are excited to see their progress on the field. No doubt the Tritons will continue to improve and are looking forward to taking on the GCU Antelopes next weekend!
